Swimming Galas
Every year over 300 primary and secondary school pupils from Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham are selected to take part in the Whippersnappers Swimming Galas in the newly refurbished Brockwell Lido .
The races are competitive and fun. We hold serious 'Olympic style' races as well as "Fun races" crossing the water in pyjamas or inflatables. During the Galas the Whippersnapper entertainers stilt walk, drum, dance and deliver workshops in martial arts, fitness, acrobatics, and streets dance. Local elders are also invited to join in with some Tai Chi, chess and dominos, and are offered a poolside cup of tea and slice of cake. Volunteers from Whippersnappers, Park Rangers, Brockwel Lido Users, The Herne Hill Safer Neighbourhoods Team, pupils on work experience and local parents all come together to help make the event a sucess. Whippersnappers, Brockwell Lido, The British Swimming Association and Lambeth Council all see the Whippersnapper Swimming Galas as an exciting opportunity to raise awareness for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. "I am absolutely delighted that Whippersnappers have decided to host their Swimming Galas this year and I hope they will continue every year until London Hosts the Olympic in 2012. This will really help to raise awareness of the games across Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham." Rt.HON.TessaJowell MP
